Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago off the northwest tip of the Bird's Head Peninsula of New Guinea, in Southwest Papua province, Indonesia. It comprises more than 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding four main islands, Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo, as well as the smaller island of Kofiau. The Raja Ampat islands lie on the Equator and are part of the Coral Triangle, which holds the richest marine biodiversity on Earth. The Raja Ampat Marine Recreation Park was established in 2009 and covers several marine areas: the waters around northern Salawati, Batanta and southwest Waigeo, Mayalibit Bay in central Waigeo, the southeastern waters of Misool, and the waters around the Sembilan Islands north of Waigeo.

According to Conservation International, marine surveys show that Raja Ampat has the highest marine biodiversity ever recorded on Earth, far greater than any other area sampled in the Coral Triangle, which spans Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste. As the Coral Triangle is the heart of the world's coral reef biodiversity, this makes Raja Ampat the richest coral reef ecosystem in the world.
